In late 2025 the chromatography field lost a pioneer and thought leader with the passing of Professor Peter W. Carr at age 81. Originally trained as an electrochemist, Carr began making contributions to the chromatography field in the 1970’s and was well known for his contributions to affinity-based separations, thermodynamics of separations, stationary phase development, and two-dimensional separations. He spent the last 47 years of his career on the faculty of the University of Minnesota, where he mentored more than 100 Ph.D., M.S., and post-doctoral students. Pete was also broadly recognized as organizer and supporter of separation science. He was instrumental in founding the Minnesota Chromatography Forum in 1978, and the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry J. Calvin Giddings Award for Excellence in Education. In recognition of his numerous contributions to the field we have organized a tribute session at this year’s HPLC2026 conference that will be filled with both outstanding science related to Pete’s long-running interests, and reflections from colleagues on their relationships with Carr as collaborators and friends.
